Mikuni Carburetor Identification for Sizing

This page is intended to help identify the type of Mikuni carb by either the top view of the Float Chamber Cover, the Float Chamber cover gasket and/or the Jet Chamber Cover gasket.  PLEASE NOTE THAT MIKUNI WILL BE PRINTED SOMEWHERE ON THE CARB, IN SMALL OR LARGE LETTERS, EVEN THOUGH IT MAY OR MAY NOT SAY SOLEX.   If the carb says only SOLEX, has a 3 bolt jet cover and says it is made in Italy or Germany or anywhere else in Europe, this is a pure European Solex and has NO interchangeable parts with Mikuni's except a fuel jet.

This is the standard 40mm PHH most common to North America. Referred to as Type R 40mm.  Throttle Butterfly will have 165 stamped on the throttle plates.  This unit has the external float adjuster & 10mm hex body needle/seat.

This is the second style of 40PHH, Type T.  This unit was OEM for Toyota, hence - Type T,  and came on several models that used the 18RG and 2TC/3TC motors.  Uses standard 40mm Type R kits and parts believe it or not. The Type T jet cover gasket and float adjuster gasket are NLA however.  It just looks funky because the Float Chamber Cover is so different.  Throttle Butterfly will have 165 stamped on the back of it.

This is the Type S4 version of the 40mm and 44mm carbs, also called the 4 bolt top cover.  Both 40 and 44's were made in this style.  Looking at the back of the butterfly will confirm size, 165 is a 40mm carb, 175 is a 44mm carb.  Note that the kits will be the same for both 40 and 44mm carb.  Simply specify Type S4 Carb.  This style carb does NOT have external float adjustment and uses a 14mm hex needle/seat.

This is the more well known Type S5 carb.  Now, once again, these came in both 40mm and 44mm versions but are best known in North America as the 44mm carb.  This is also referred to as the 5 bolt top cover style of carb.  Looking at the back of the butterfly will confirm size, 165 is a 40mm carb, 175 is a 44mm carb.  Note that the kits will be the same for both 40 and 44mm carb.  Simply specify Type S5 Carb.  The S5 also has the external float adjuster around the fuel inlet pipe and uses a 10mm hex needle/seat.


NOTE:  MIKUNI NOW ONLY MAKES A UNIVERSAL STYLE FLOAT CHAMBER GASKET THAT FITS BOTH THE TYPE S4 AND TYPE S5 CARB.  IF YOU LOOK CLOSELY, YOU CAN SEE ALL OF THE SAME ELEMENTS IN EACH FLOAT CHAMBER GASKET EXCEPT FOR THE 5TH HOLE IN THE FRONT.  NOT TO WORRY, IT WORKS PERFECTLY AS THEY INTENDED IT TO, JUST SIMPLY SLICE OFF THE PART OF THE 5TH HOLE THAT HANGS OUT THE FRONT AFTER ASSEMBLY ON A 4 BOLT TOP CARB!!

This is the Ubiquitous Early Type Q carb.  Orignally all Mikuni carbs were this style and actually came in not only 40mm, 44mm, but 36mm and the big boy 50mm race carb.  All of these are fairly rare but the 36mm and 50mm are the rarest.  These are also referred to as PHH2 carbs but for our purposes, we will call them Type Q.  The 44 PHH2 was also the earliest original "Solex" option carb for the Datsun 2000 Roadster.  This carb uses a 14mm hex needle/seat.  Mikuni does not offer a rebuild kit for these carbs but WCR has their own kits available including the OEM gaskets shown.  Just Ask!!

A few notes about our Classifieds


This is the latest, greatest update to the classifieds page.  We have many more parts available than in the past.  Most of what we are offering are  Hard-Core Racing Parts.  We only sell parts that are in good useable condition.  In many cases, we obtain these specifically for selling on this page, in other cases, these are parts we no longer use ourselves.  IN ALL CASES, we check the parts and offer them for sale as shown.  We try to represent them in their actual condition and try to offer pix wherever possible.  In almost all cases, the prices shown are almost exactly half of the original MSRP of the parts.  We feel this is extremely fair for parts in good to excellent condition.  Parts that are a little further past their prime are priced accordingly.  In all cases, I may be willing to dicker if WE feel the price will be mutually acceptable.  It doesn't hurt to ask.

This page will be updated at least monthly so e-mail if you see anything you are interested in.  We accept CREDIT CARDS, Paypal , MO and personal checks.  I ship immediately on CC, Paypal and MO's.  Personal checks take 10 days to clear.  I can ship anywhere via UPS ground.  Shipping charges are extra.  A note about Paypal ; Paypal has fees associated with the use of their service.  These fees amount to about 3% of the transaction.  You, the customer, does not pay these fees, I do as the merchant accepting the transaction, credit card or cash.  I will accept and pay the fees up to $200.  Over that amount, the 3% must be added to all purchases.  Your satisfaction is our guarantee.  If you are not happy with something, return it for refund minus 15% restocking charge & shipping charges.
